Who are we? What's this community all about?
This Forum is a sub-section of the http://www.equity-for-illness.org.nz website
We are a community of ill & disabled people, their families, plus a huge group of supporters. This site is where we share information with one another and the rest of the world. The aim is for members to be able to give and receive positive support and solutions to help each others lives to be a little easier.
To summarise the background:
If you have cancer, cerebral palsy, are at risk of a heart attack or stroke; have multiple sclerosis, arthritis, or any other life-changing illness not related to an accident, this site is for you. Good health can be a fragile state. If your health crumbles you’re thrust into a world you know little about.
New Zealand has two streams of health funding each governed by different entities: ACC protects those injured by an accident; the Ministry of Health (through the agencies of Enable Funding and Accessable) are responsible for those who develop an illness. While both deal with New Zealanders with similar levels of need, by comparison the funding and service provision provided by the Ministry of Health severely disadvantages those of us with illnesses.
You will read stories of hardship, stories of tremendous success, stories of courage and determination, but most importantly you will see a wonderful group of people working together to help one another through this journey we call life.
This can be a terrific handbook and guide to those with recent illness.
This can be a terrific education tool to those seeking knowledge.
This can be a terrific online community of friendship for those who don't get out much.
This can be a terrific place to laugh and cry, to have fun and to address serious issues.
Whatever it is that you seek, we hope you find it here. If not, lets create it!
Welcome to our community, please stay and have a cuppa.

Afiliates
Learn about organisations affiliated with us, what they can offer you, what you can offer them.
It's OK to offer to volunteer to help someone. If you think you can lend a hand, no matter how insignificant you may think you can offer, someone will appreciate you greatly - what a wonderful feeling.

Terms of membership
Members of this forum have access to extra areas of this site which contain a fantastic source of information. Members are also able to request and provide information and support among each other.
Please feel welcome to register and become a part of this expanding network by clicking "register" above.
This is NOT a place where members can come to whinge about the inadequacies of the Health system, and of the negatives around their own treatment. Members must accept that ~we know~ most of these issues. Lets move on above that and look at Solutions instead of just complaining about the cause.
Sometimes venting is great therapy, there is no question about that, but this is not the place to vent.
Again, this forum is to discuss the Solutions, not to dwell on the Problems.
Disclaimer:
We must emphasise that most of the opinions and suggestions posted on this website are just that: Opinions and Suggestions.
It is strongly advised that people posting information provide a link to their source of their information, where applicable.
This is an open community for the sharing of information, not a medical website. When medical information is posted a link to the source of that information (i.e. a medical website) should be given, otherwise whatever is stated can only be viewed as the personal opinion of the member who posted it.
It is also strongly advised that individuals make their own decisions regarding what support/ assistance they seek and use and that they are aware of the reasons they do so.
Abuse in any way of any member or their opinions will not be tolerated - free speech rights should be respected, but, in return, the right to question someones opinion should also be respected.
We encourage open discussion in our forums but we expect maturity and civil debate in the case of any difference of opinion.
